Hatchet 3 (2013) review

Hatchet 3 is the Hatchet's horror film of 2013. It tells the story of Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.

The practical effects in the film are the film's biggest strength. Hatchet 3 is a horror film that employs CG effects in a lesser degree than other films. Hatchet 3 has a number of makeup effects that are practical and sets, which results in some truly terrifying scenes in the movie.

Kane Hodder stands out as an formidable villain. The cast provides an impressive performance. The dialogue is a bit snarky and witty to feel like a true '80s slasher movie at times. There are some really humorous moments that provide a comic contrast to the heart-wrenching (click now to read clips) violence.

The budget for the film was restricted to just one million dollars. This means that a lot of locations featured in the film are re-used from earlier films. One boat house is used twice and most of the scenes feel like they're recycled from previous films. It can feel almost familiar to viewers who have seen Hatchet or Hatchet 2.

In the end, Hatchet 3 was very enjoyable. I found it to be remarkably like other films in this series. However, Hatchet 3 provided lots of gory thrills and entertaining performances by its cast.
